The Lady Knights bats were held silent into the 4th inning by Cambridge freshman pitcher Lauren Cooper. Cooper had pinpoint accuracy and change of speeds throughout the contest that had the River Ridge batters off balance until……. 2 outs in the 4th inning. That is when the swords came to life and the Lady Knights rattled off 3 hits in a row to score 3 runs to go ahead 4-3.
In that inning , third baseman Grace Hamrick got it started with a 2 out walk, left-fielder Elyse Navarro doubled to center a 3-1 offering from Cooper that set stage for Knights Player of the Game, Sophomore Micah Jones to tie the game 3-3 with a first pitch gap line drive to right-center that scored Hamrick and Navarro. Freshman outfielder Kaytlin Stacey would then hit a single to left and a errant throw to 3rd hit off Jones helmet which would score Jones to pull the Lady Knights ahead by 1 run.
Winning starting pitcher, sophomore Gracie Hughes (2-0;1.56) pitched 4 innings against a talented Bears offense. Hughes struggled early with control but as game went on she settled into her game and let her defense work behind her. Hughes pitching line was 4 IP, 4 Hits, 3 BB, 1 K and 2 ER.
Junior Sydney Osada came in to game in relief of Hughes in the 5th inning. Osada earned her first save of season by pitching 3 innings of 3 hit ball while giving up 2 earn runs.
Lady Knights offense was led by Jones who went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. Navarro had her second multi-hit performance of the season with a 4th inning double and 6th inning single.
River Ridge (6-0; 4-0) hosts county opponent, Cherokee (0-0;0-0) at 7pm Tuesday night August 13, 2019.
