Knights News · GHSA Class 6A Section B

Five of our Knights traveled south to the GHSA Class 6A Section B tournament hosted by Valdosta this past weekend. Three of our Knights secured wins in the first round of the tournament Friday evening. Sophomore 145 Jake Piccirilli picked up a 1st round victory by pin over Morrow’s Welch Xavier. Sophomore 170 Jesus Perez-Coronel  won by pin in the 1st round over Mt. Zion Jonesboro’s Deshawn Jennings. Senior 285 Jacob Salmond pinned Houston County’s Tad Weatherall to win his first 1st round match. 113 Hudson Andrews would fall to Pope’s Jacob Robinson and 195 Francisco Altamirano would fall to Coffee County’s Gatlin Smith in their 1st round matches.

Later that evening in the quarter finals, Jake Piccirilli beat Cambridge’s Nick Owens by decision 5-0 to move on to the semi-finals. Jacob Salmond picked up another pin over MLK’s Keion Cush to move on to the semi-finals. Jesus Perez-Coronel would fall to eventual sectional champ Dominique Dale of Valdosta and drop down to wrestle backs. Hudson Andrews picked up a win over Stephenson’s Titus Sanders to stay alive in the tournament and move on to Saturday. Francisco Altamirano would lose his second match over the evening at 195 to Chattahoochee’s Nate Bukovich. Francisco had a tremendous season after getting knocked out of last with a broken arm.

Day  2 of the tournament would start with Hudson Andrews picking up a win in the 2nd round of wrestle backs over Mt. Zion Jonesboro’s Jose Mejia. This victory would secure Hudson’s trip to the state tournament in Macon and become the second freshman in our program’s history to make it to state. Jesus Perez-Coronel would fall to Tucker’s Justin Carter and finish 9th in the tournament. Jesus was the first wrestler in our program to qualify for sectionals as a 1st year wrestler. He finished his 1st season with a record of 26-18. This is an outstanding accomplishment for a 1st year wrestler and we look forward to having Jesus for TWO more years in our program.

In the semi-finals Jake Piccirilli would major Dunwoody’s Luke Pankey 8-0 and move on to the finals at 145. Jacob Salmond came up just short to North Atlanta’s Wesley Horton 9-6. Jacob would fall to the wrestle back semis. Due to an injury and wanting to make sure Jacob is as healthy as can be for the state tournament he would injury forfeit and end the tournament placing 6th. In the finals Jake Piccirilli lost a heart breaker to Coffee’s County Case Merritt 3-2. Jake proved that he can compete with some of the top talent in 6A and we are looking forward to our trip to Macon this next week for the state tournament. Hudson Andrews would finish the tournament 8th.
